National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
On September 30, 2021, Canada marked the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation remembering and honouring residential school survivors and their families.
On June 3, 2021, the Federal Government amended the Canada Labour Code to recognize September 30 as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:
We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.
With this in mind, OMI Lacombe Canada will recognize September 30 as a statutory holiday for staff across the country. This decision to observe the new holiday is consistent with all efforts toward reconciliation. Queen’s House, in keeping with this guidance and in full agreement with it, will honour this day as well and will close the business aspects of our centre although we will remain open for normal use as required by our community. Further, we recommend that as individuals, we use this day to reflect on the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and suggest the following link to engage in suggesting individual next steps.
